About Stepping Stones Care

Our Story

Stepping Stones Care began with two brothers. Lewis Turner shared a close bond with his brother, Michael, who had Down syndrome. When Michael tragically passed away in an accident, Lewis and his wife chose to honor his life by making a donation and committing themselves to improving the quality of care available to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

What began as an act of love during a time of profound loss soon inspired a movement of small programs and service agencies throughout the Valdosta, Georgia area. Around the same time, a small facility was established in France, where Michael had lived. Together, those efforts became the foundation of what would grow into Stepping Stones Care. Today, we serve adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the metro Atlanta area.

We are an organization born from one family's love for Michael, and from their belief that people with disabilities deserve the very best care and opportunities. As we have grown, we have never lost sight of that original commitment: to care for every person with the same compassion, dignity, and dedication that Lewis and his wife wanted for Michael: helping each individual build confidence, participate in their community, and find a stepping stone toward living life as fully and independently as possible.

We are proud to be a family-founded company, and we run the program the way we'd want it run for our own family member, because for us that was never hypothetical. Our family and team have been serving people with IDD since 1986. Stepping Stones Care is simply the newest step in work that began decades ago.
